Not sure what you want to major in? Guess what? Most students entering college don’t know exactly what they want to do. They know what they like… math, science, English or history… or don’t like… math, science, English or history… but they don’t know how to sort it all out and arrive at a major.
Among the advantages of attending Alfred University if you don’t know what you want to do next year, much less four years from now:
• We’re a small university, with about 2,000 undergraduate students and a faculty-student ratio of about 1 to 12. That means you’ll get the kind of personal attention from your professors – almost all of whom are full-time, with terminal degrees in their fields – that you need as you explore your options.
• An emphasis on good teaching, and good advising. Some of our faculty members are internationally known in their fields as researchers, artists, writers, real leaders, but their first priority is always the students. They’ll help you figure out what you like and mentor you as you as you choose a major.
• Uncommon flexibility. We are a university, but we try very hard not to erect barriers and walls between our academic programs in the various colleges and schools. That means if you are an art major who wants to take a biology course, an engineer who has always wanted to blow glass, or a business student who wants to write poetry, we can help you do that easily, without a lot of paperwork.
But the time comes, usually at the end of your sophomore year, when you really do have to declare a major. If you still find that your interests are diverse and haven’t coalesced into one area, you may want to choose our Track II option, and create your own major.
