International Exchange Students

Alfred University accepts semester or year-long exchange applications from students attending our partner universities.

Application Procedure
If you would like to participate in the exchange program, the international office on your campus should contact our International Programs Office to let us know you have been nominated by your university for an exchange. Once you have been nominated you will need to fill out an application form. Applications are due by April 15 for the fall semester and October 15 for the spring semester.

Some things you will need in order to apply:

  • Proof of Health Insurance
Exchange students enter the United States on a J-1 visa. Our student health insurance does meet J-1 visa requirements, you will be charged for our health insurance automatically, once you are accepted to our university. If you have adequate health insurance that meets the federal J-1 visa requirements, you will need to send proof of your coverage along with your application and any other required documents in order to be exempt from our coverage.
  • Proof of Financial Support
Students must provide a bank statement or a letter from their bank indicating they have the funds needed for their living expenses while at Alfred University. The estimated living expenses for the semester or year for which you are applying are provided on the application form.
  • A Copy of Your Passport
You will need to include a photocopy of the front page of your passport with your application.
  • Statement of Purpose
Please supply a brief statement (300-500 words) detailing your reasons for wanting to study at Alfred University and the ways in which you think this experience will contribute to your current studies.
  • Academic Reference
Please ask your academic advisor or another professor at your home university who knows you well to write a letter on your behalf. Your international studies coordinator can include this letter with your application or the letter can be mailed directly to us.
  • Official Academic Transcript
Please be sure to send an official Academic Transcript with your initial application. This will be used in determining your academic level for course selection.
  • Portfolio (Art & Design students only)
Students planning to attend Alfred University's School of Art and Design must submit a CD with ten images of their work in the area of concentration they hope to pursue.

The college or school you are applying to (College of Liberal Arts & Sciences, College of Professional Studies, the School of Business, the School of Art & Design or the Inamori School of Engineering) may ask for additional materials and information, such as transcripts or a portfolio.

Housing and Meals
Alfred is a small, residential campus. Most students live in residence halls, apartments or themed housing on-campus and eat their meals in the campus dining halls. As an exchange student, you will be eligible for on-campus housing and a meal plan. Once you have been admitted, we will send you information about the variety of housing and meal plan options available to you.

Course Offerings
To find out what classes will be offered during the semester you would like to attend, go to the course schedule where you will be able to find classes in each subject area. Classes for the following semester are usually posted by the middle of October for the Spring semester and the middle of March for the Fall semester.
