It might be an undergraduate research or capstone project. It’s great to say you learned something, but it’s even better to demonstrate that you can apply what you’ve learned. Some majors require a research project or capstone experience, and all encourage it. Undertake a research project. Write and direct a play. Choreograph a dance. Exhibit your art. It might be time spent in the community. The faculty at Alfred University is committed to incorporating service learning into their courses. One class spent two weeks in Costa Rica, perfecting their Spanish, but also working in a community center. Another wrote and produced community radio shows. Engineering students introduced area high school students to the use of a scanning electron microscope, while others take their demonstrations on the road to nearby classrooms with “Science on Wheels.” Students in a gerontology class work with nursing home residents, and sociology students study how domestic violence affects families in a rural area. Or perhaps it is a visit to another country. Alfred University is committed to providing an international experience for as many of our students as possible. For some, it will be a week-long trip as part of a class. For others, it will be a semester spent abroad, or an international internship. Come see what Alfred University inspires in you! |
