Global Awareness Roundtable - Japan

Date: Wed., Feb 10
Time: 7:00 p.m. - 8:00pm
Place: Knight Club

Sayaka Matsue, an exchage student from Ristumeikan University, Kyoto, Japan, will join us in talking about "Shukatsu"("job hunting" in Japanese) in Japan

While Sayaka talks about college women's job hunting in Japan, Dr Yatani will talk about "Japan in the 1980s and the first decade of the 21st century": in other words, the country of "a rising sun" around when our current college students were born and the country of "the lost 20 years" during which it faced the serious economic downturn. Although its economic aspect of the country is "negative" as best symbolized by the current Toyota trouble, some of the cultural aspects have been rather "blooming" in the us as best represented BY Anime, Manga, Haiku, Tea and Tea Ceremony, Zen, among others.

Limited Time: Art Therapy Interest Gauge

What art therapy is: the use of the process of creation of art and/or resulting art piece to aid in the understanding and treatment of emotional and mental trauma/disturbance.

There are currently flyers up in Harder Hall (around the corner from the art office), the Science Center (outside the psychology office), and Myers Hall (see Corrie Burdick, 3rd floor) announcing an informal art therapy interest gauge. More flyers will be up soon.

The purpose of this is to find out how much interest there is on the Alfred University campus in regards to seeing/participating in a renewed AU art therapy club and/or seeing/participating in a potential official AU art therapy major/minor program. I and a few other people are willing to work on this if interest is significant.

If you are interested in art therapy, please help the cause by signing your name on one of those aforementioned flyers or contacting myself at vdf1@alfred.edu.

Thank you!

Free Soup Social to Ease the Winter Doldrums

During break, a group of employees gathered to share a potluck lunch. While we were dining and visiting, we came up with the idea of having a Soup Social for University employees. This would give everyone an opportunity to chat with others within the University while enjoying some fine food! We decided to plan this event for Jan. 14 and it was a huge success. Over 50 University employees gathered!

Our next Soup Social is Wednesday, Feb. 10 at noon in the Kenyon/Allen Room of the Powell Campus Center. We have volunteers for this Soup Social for the food. We would like to invite anyone in the University to join us.

If you are interested in coming, please reply to bankern@alfred.edu so that we can plan on how much food to make? We will provide ice water. You may bring your own beverage if you prefer something else.

While this is a completely free event, we ask those who attend to help the new tradition continue by volunteering to bring food (or chip in some money) for future Soup Socials (the next scheduled one is Wednesday, March 17). We hope to see you there!

Electronic Forms Service Available from ITS

In an effort to streamline AU's data collection process, ITS is offering an Electronic Forms service to the campus. AU offices may convert existing paper forms to online forms using Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro.

Specially formatted PDF forms can be submitted to an E-Forms administration page on the staff portal. The forms are reviewed by ITS and published to the E-forms pages on the staff and student portals.

Once the forms have been filled out, they can be retrieved from a restricted folder on AU's U drive. For the safety of the AU community, ITS cannot publish any forms asking for Social Security numbers or any other sensitive personal information.

Any staff member interested in submitting E-forms for publication must obtain permission from a supervisor and complete required E-Forms training. Training will be provided on an as-needed basis.

To request training, please contact Meghanne Freivald at 871.2363 or via e-mail.
