Students Planning to Work at AU - Complete Form I-9 by 9/3

Alfred University is an E-Verify Employer. If you are planning to work at Alfred University at anytime this academic year and did not work for AU Jan. 1, 2010, you must complete a Form I-9 by Friday, Sept. 3, 2010. Human Resources has set up additional staff at the Powell Campus Center in the McNamara Room (lower level) to process your Form I-9.

SCHEDULE
Through Sept. 3, 2010
Monday - Friday 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Saturday & Sunday noon to 4 p.m.

Documents Needed to Complete the I-9
To complete the I-9, students need to provide this specific documentation:
Photo ID (For example: AU Student ID card or driver's license. A complete list of the identification forms that can be used to complete the I-9 can be found at www.uscis.gov/files/form/....)
and
An original Social Security Card or original birth certificate
OR
A valid U.S. Passport
All documents must be original, copies cannot be accepted.

Last Day to ADD Fall Semester Classes

As published in the 2010-11 Academic Calendar (attached), registration for Fall Semester courses (other than B-Block courses) ends this Friday, Aug. 27. Students can register for A-Block and semester-length courses only until Web registration closes Friday night at midnight. Note that Aug. 27 is also the last day to DROP A-Block courses.

Registration (or an A-Block DROP) after the deadline, which may or may not be approved by your Dean, requires a trip to the Student Service Center in Seidlin Hall. If a request for a late ADD or DROP is approved, a $35 late fee is assessed.

Looking ahead, the last day to DROP semester-length Fall classes is Friday, Sept. 3.

Join Symphonic Band and/or Jazz Band!

Come join the Alfred University Symphonic Band and/or Jazz Band! Both ensembles perform a variety of music that is challenging yet fun to play. Open to all levels of musicians. We have instruments available on a "first come, first served" basis.

This semester, the Symphonic Band will be performing celebratory music in honor of our new Miller Theatre! There are no auditions for the Symphonic Band.

The Jazz Band will perform swing, Latin, funk and more! There may be auditions required for some sections.

Symphonic Band meets 5:30-7 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays and Jazz Band meets 7:15-8:45 p.m. on Mondays and Thursdays in room 302 of the Miller Performing Arts Center.

The Sexy Pitches, Alfred's all-female a cappella group, will be holding auditions this Saturday, Aug. 28, at 4 p.m. in Miller 300. We are looking for enthusiastic women in all voice ranges.

No prior a cappella experience is necessary and there is no need to prepare a piece. Just bring your voice and love of singing to Miller!

NY Times Newspaper Subscription Available

NY TImes daily newspaper subscription is available through the AU Bookstore. We offer the educational price each semester. The subscription is M-F does not include Sunday, and available for pick-up at the bookstore daily after 1:30 p.m.

For this Fall semester, newspaper delivery starts Monday Aug. 30- Dec. 3 for $32. There are no papers during fall break and Thanksgiving break. Please sign up at the bookstore.

Strategic Opportunity Stipends

Strategic Opportunity Stipends (SOS) Deadline:
Friday, Sept. 24, 2010

Strategic Opportunity Stipends (SOS) provides grants designed to help individual artists of all disciplines take advantage of specific, unique opportunities that will significantly benefit their work or career. These are $200-$1,500 grants for forthcoming opportunities (not necessarily projects) that are distinct from an artist's ongoing work.

Please note that you may now request a maximum amount of up to $1,500 for your SOS opportunity. There will also be a total of two SOS deadlines this year.

The next deadline is Sept. 24, 2010. This deadline is for opportunities occurring between November 1, 2010 and May 31, 2011.

To apply:

1. Applicants must be at least 18 years old and a full-time resident for the past year of one of the participating New York State counties (see step 3 or page 6 of the application. NOTE: SOS is NOT available to residents of the 5 boroughs of New York City). Applicants cannot be enrolled in a graduate or undergraduate degree program at the time of application.
