Alumni - An AU Love Story
Leonard '49 and Shirley (Bernstein) '50 Gold

The love story between us began in Hornell when we got off the train from Hoboken, New Jersey, before even reaching Alfred University. Introduction was made by Barbara Klotz, Shirlee's prospective roommate, who remembered Len from a summer camp they had both attended. We became better acquainted during freshman orientation week where it was pointed out that long term campus romances were a common occurrence.

Len was a veteran returning from service and coming back to Alfred University where he had participated in an ASTRP program prior to overseas duty and had accumulated some college credits. Shirlee was a freshman beginning her college career. The romance continued and grew throughout their years at Alfred. Len graduated in 1949. Shirlee completed her studies over that summer at universities in New York City and received her degree with the class of 1950.

We became engaged in June, 1949 and were married on May 28, 1950. In attendance at the wedding were Bobbie(Klotz) Jacobson, Neety (Singer) Decker and Ted Decker, Frank Pasternack and Danny Groden all Alfred 1949 and 1950 classmates.

Married life began in Jackson Heights, New York. Len became President of a prominent packaging company which, over time, necessitated a move to Edison, New Jersey. Once Len retired we moved to Florida where we now reside.

We are very proud of our son, Steven, a nationally and internationally known Psychologist with special expertise in trauma, and of our grandchildren Andrea, Lylah and Adam, all living nearby in Florida.

We attended our 40th, 45th, and 50th Alfred reunions enabling us to revisit the place that is so special in our lives and to confirm that the AU Love Story continues.
