Hurricane Sandy Update: Alumni appeal to Alumni

As power and communications infrastructure are slowly restored in the New York-New Jersey areas hardest hit by Superstorm Sandy, we are learning of alumni and students whose lives have been affected by the storm.

Danielle Argueta '91 sent a message to the Alfred University Facebook page, asking for help for one of her Theta Theta Chi sisters, Kellie Geressy Nilsen '94 ,whose house on Staten Island was destroyed by the storm.

On behalf of Kellie, Danielle has appealed to the sisters of Theta Theta Chi and other members of the Alfred University family. Kellie and her family need cleaning supplies, gloves, paper towels "and just people to help move things out and clean up."

Kellie and her family lost all their belongings, including clothing. Danielle asks those who have clothing and/or cleaning supplies to donate to send the items to Kellie's mother:
Pat Geressy
940 Rensselaer Avenue
Staten Island, NY 10309

What is needed are boys' clothing size 5T and 4T, boys' shoes sizes 13 and 10 (W); men's clothing, size 3X; men's shoes, size 13; and women's clothing -- leggings, sweatpants and sweatshirts, "bulky stuff a mom can just throw on," and women's shoes, size 10.

Luke Holian '96, who is on assignment in Iraq with the State Department mission, responded to an email from President Charles Edmondson, saying his immediate family was safe, but that his brother, Pat, lost his home in Long Beach on Long Island.

" He is looking for a 2 bedroom dwelling to rent that is close to the Long Island Railroad.  He is married and has a newborn.  He has no pets.If someone can help him then please contact him at patholian@gmail.com I would be eternally grateful for any assistance," wrote Luke.

NYS student loan relief for alumni living in areas affected by Sandy

If requested, New Yorkers in Bronx, Kings, Nassau, New York, Queens, Richmond, Rockland Suffolk and Westchester counties are now eligible to receive a 90 day grace period, from October 27, 2012 to January 25, 2013, in order to repay their student loan payments. All members of the military who have been called to assist in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy will also be eligible. Borrowers should contact HESC to request a temporary suspension by calling 1-866-991-HESC (4372) or by emailing Dept736@hesc.ny.gov.
