Head Coach: Harry Hurd
Membership:
The Western Equestrian Team (AUET) is made up of varsity and junior varsity riders at various levels from walk-jog to the open reining division. The Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) welcomes all riders from beginner to riders who have competed at the upper levels.
Practices:
Varsity - three times a week
Junior varsity - twice a week
"The varsity western team is a great opportunity for riders of all levels of show experience to improve their horsemanship skills as a catch rider. In our first year, we had a lot of good times and success; at our first Western show we won as a team. We also had 5 riders qualify for Regional's and I am very fortunate to have qualified for Nationals. From reining to walk-trot, we all work together and cheer each other on at the shows."
- Katie (sophomore)
Selection:
All student riders are welcome to try out for the team. Tryouts are held at the start of the fall semester and the selection committee chooses riders from a wide range of skill levels and backgrounds. Criteria include:
• Commitment to the team.
• Commitment to self-improvement.
• Ability to safely ride unfamiliar horses.
Students not selected for the varsity team have an opportunity to compete at the junior varsity level. There are two shows in the fall and two in the spring.
Competition:
Intercollegiate competition is unique in that all riders compete on randomly drawn horses supplied by the school hosting the event. The rider, not the horse, is judged during the competition.
Approved helmets are required for all lessons and competitions. Varsity team members are responsible for their own show clothing and helmet.
