Athletic tradition - Alfred University's tradition in intercollegiate athletics goes back more than 100 years and is as strong today as it has ever been.
NCAA Division III - AU sponsors:
- 11 varsity women's sports (Alpine skiing, basketball, cross country, lacrosse, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, tennis, indoor and outdoor track and field and volleyball)
- 10 varsity men's sports (Alpine skiing, basketball, cross country, football, lacrosse, soccer, swimming and diving, tennis and indoor and outdoor track and field)
- One co-ed varsity sport (equestrian).
Empire 8 Athletic Conference - AU is a member of the Empire 8 Athletic Conference. Formed in 1999, the Empire 8 sponsors 22 varsity sports. The Empire 8 champion earns an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III championships.
Eastern College Athletic Conference - AU is also affiliated with the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) which sponsors championships in 20 men's and women's sports at the Division III level.
