Saxons cruise in victories over Medaille and Morrisville
Men’s Lacrosse (7-7, 2-6 Empire 8): On Friday afternoon the men’s lacrosse team defeated visiting Medaille College, 14-7, at Merrill Field.
Despite trailing 4-5 at the half, AU outshot the Mavericks 41-9 in the second half while scoring 10 goals to secure the victory.
Freshman attack Marc Zoyhofski (Blasdell, NY/Frontier) netted a game-high four goals and also added an assist for the Saxons. Freshman attack Matt Leslie (Ballston Spa, NY/Ballston Spa) notched a hat trick while senior midfielder Jeremy Florence (Unionville, PA/Unionville) and freshman attack Sean Murray (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) tallied two goals each.
Sophomore midfielder Mark Pincelli (Rochester, NY/Aquinas) had three assists and senior midfielder Andy Haynes (Rockford, MI/Rockford) finished with one goal and two assists.
AU freshman goalie Adam Schutz (Geneva, NY/Geneva) made eight saves.
Saturday afternoon the Saxons wrapped up their 2008 season with a 12-3 win over host SUNY Morrisville. AU outshot the Mustangs 46-29 in the contest, and has outshot their opponents 251-99 over the last four games.
Zoyhofski scored four goals to lead the Saxons. Freshman midfielder Justin Kieffer (Middletown, MD/Middletown) added three goals while Haynes, Leslie, Murray, freshman midfielder Larry Gerardi (East Northport, NY/Northport) and Pincelli each chipped in with one goal. Schutz made 12 saves in 60 minutes of work for the Saxons.

Softball team competes at Conference championship
Softball (22-11, 8-4 Empire 8): The softball team lost to St. John Fisher, 2-1, in the first game of the Empire 8 Conference championship tournament at Ithaca College’s Kostrinsky Field.
The second-seeded Saxons trailed 2-0 entering the bottom of the seventh and, after pushing across one run with one out, left the potential tying run on second base.
The Lady Saxons trailed the entire game as Fisher scored single runs in the second and third. AU’s best chance to score was in the third. Sophomore Holly Seidewand (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) hit a one-out double, but was doubled off second on a fly to center by sophomore second baseman Jordan Siefer (Sylvania, OH/Sylvania Southview).
AU mounted a comeback in the last of the seventh when freshman first baseman Ashley Passaro (Long Beach, NY/Long Beach) smashed a leadoff double. Senior Satomi Tomizawa (Fukushima, Japan/Iwaki Sakuragaoka) pinch ran for Passaro and advanced to third on an error, which put sophomore outfielder Jessica Figallo (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) on first.
A sacrifice bunt by sophomore shortstop Karen Folts (Penn Yan, NY/Penn Yan) scored Tomizawa, with Figallo advancing to second.
Seidewand allowed two runs (one unearned) on seven hits, struck out one and walked one in taking the loss for the Saxons. Passaro and sophomore third baseman Jesika LeBarron (Campbell, NY/Corning West) each had two hits for Alfred.
On Friday afternoon softball team rebounded from the loss to St. John Fisher with a 11-3 six-inning win over Nazareth in an elimination game.
Alfred jumped out to a 7-0 lead against Nazareth after three innings before Nazareth cut the deficit to four with three runs in the bottom of the fifth. AU bounced back with four in the top of the sixth and held Nazareth scoreless in the home half.
Seidewand got the victory and tossed four innings of scoreless ball before being relieved by LeBarron in the fifth. Seidewand re-entered the game with two outs in the fifth after LeBarron allowed three Nazareth runs. After the Lady Saxons got four in the sixth, Seidewand set the Golden Flyers down in order to secure the victory.
Seidewand helped herself at the plate with two hits, including a homerun, two runs and two RBIs. Folts went 3-for-4 with a double, two runs and four RBIs; Passaro had an RBI single and scored a run; sophomore rightfielder Lauren Peterson (Abingdon, MD/Harford Tech) hit a two-run homerun; LeBarron scored twice; and Siefer had two hits and scored a run. Passaro’s RBI gives her 29 for the year, a new AU single-season record. Seidewand allowed four hits over 5 1/3 innings, striking out four.
Saturday afternoon the Lady Saxons lost to St. John Fisher, 4-3, and was eliminated from the Empire 8 Conference championship tournament.
LeBarron went 3-for-4 with a double for Alfred, while Figallo had two hits, including a double, drove in a run and score once. Freshman designated hitter Brittany Loucks (Addison, NY/Addison) chipped in with a pair of hits and a run and sophomore leftfielder Shannon Mather (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott) drove in a run with a triple. Seidewand took the loss on the mound for Alfred, allowing four earned runs on nine hits and striking out three.

Track teams compete at outdoor championship
Track: The men’s and women’s track and field teams competed Friday and Saturday at the New York State Collegiate Track Conference (NYSCTC) outdoor championships, held at the University of Rochester.
The AU men’s team placed 15th, while Alfred’s women’s team did not score. Junior Ryan Squillacioti (Smithtown, NY/Hauppauge) led the AU men with a third-place finish in the shot put (14.49 meters). Other Saxons who scored points were sophomore Lee Consolo (Pleasantville, NY/Pleasantville), seventh in the 400-meter run (50.31 seconds), and senior Dan Ohart (Williamsport, PA/Williamsport), seventh in the javelin (47.82 meters).
Other top performers for the Alfred men’s team were: freshman Shawn Ross (Ticonderoga, NY/Ticonderoga), ninth in the shot put (13.45 meters); and senior Matt Karczewski (Penn Yan, NY/Penn Yan), 13th in both the 1,500-meter run (4:17.74) and 3,000-meter steeplechase (9:55.17.
Senior Ashley Johnson (Montrose, PA/Montrose) led the AU women’s team with a 10th-place finish in the 10,000-meter run (46:04.51). Sophomore Megan Crimmins (Big Flats, NY/Horseheads) was 15th in the 1,500-meter run (4:59.14) and freshman Melissa Haahr (Owego, NY/Tioga) was 22nd in the 400-meter hurdles (1:13.68).

Western Equestrian to compete at IHSA Championship
Equestrian: The AU Western equestrian team will be returning to action this week as they travel to Burbank, CA to compete at the IHSA nationals that take place May 8-11.
