Josef Schützenhöfer Lecture,The Liberation Project

- Location: Homles Auditorium
(5:00 PM - 6:30 PM)
Josef Schützenhöfer is visiting Alfred University for the second time as the Theodore Randall International Chair in the Division of Drawing, Painting and Photography. He will lecture on a recent project entitled "The Liberation Project".

He also has a solo exhibition at The Cohen Gallery until Oct. 12. The show features three bodies of work on paper of politically charged work addressing liberation and indignant police authority in Austria.

Schützenhöfer states, "It is not the foremost role of the artist, lawyer, or journalist to reside in the ivory tower and regurtitate the goods of academia. Instead they are to focus their craft towards the margins of our society. There, everyday, they are to control the bearing of the state, the powers to be, to guarantee that our thoughts are not curtailed, our movements not limited, and our liberties not blocked."

Josef Schützenhöfer (born in 1954 in Austria) immigrated to the USA when he was 19 years old and had 28 dollars in his pocket. He started his art studies at the Cleveland Institute of Art. To keep his head above water, he interrupted his studies and worked as a dental technician for the US Navy for 3 ? years.

He later completed his B.A. at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, VA. His M.A. was completed at the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, MD. There he studied under Grace Hartigan and Sal Scarpitto.

In 1996, Schützenhöfer returned with his family to Austria. He works independently in a studio located in the local castle on contractual as well as personal works.

His works and projects have a mission, they are to patrol the peripheries, to confront and test those who think they govern our movement and our space.
For Schützenhöfer, art has a social obligation to ensure that liberties we have attained are not curtailed while they stand unguarded. The artistic stance is a representational one, accessible, approachable- an engagement against political suppression and outrages. It is also a message to promote involvement and participation in all disciplines and on all levels- local, national, or international.

Currently, Schützenhöfer is expanding his "Liberation Project". The goal is to establish a cultural exchange program which involves inviting artists from the allied countries (during WWII) to Austria- specifically to his home turf of Pöllau in Styria- to reflect on the continuing reactions of the locals concerning the liberation of Austria from the Nazis.
