"Consuming Japan: Ceramic Dishes, Japanese Design, and the Politics of French Taste" a lecture by Emily Eastgate Brink

This talk examines how a single dinner service, designed by a printmaker, revolutionized French ceramic design. The first dinnerware to combine Japanese motifs with French ceramic forms, Félix Bracquemond’s Service Rousseau reshaped table settings, social rituals, and French taste in 1860s Paris.

In its production and use, Bracquemond’s service democratized access to high design and Japanese culture, ultimately transforming cups and saucers into new carriers of political and cultural meaning in France.
