IEA Artist in Residence: Donald Ha?I Phu´ Daedalus
Sponsored by: The Institute for Electronic Arts and the Division of Expanded Media
Donald Daedalus of Bronx County, NY, will be visiting the IEA for an artist residency over the week of June 5th. Donald, who received his MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute, arrives at new ideas through the use and invention of tools. Workflows, physical instruments, methodologies, even projects themselves work into the advancement of his projects. This philosophy even carries over into his video work. These tools seek to address a main theme in his work – suspicion, questioning external experiences and information and testing beliefs to see if they hold up to scrutiny.
Donald’s proposal is connected to an ongoing project titled The Illinois River Project where he is designing a system to use the bonemeal of invasive carp in Illinois to remediate soil of lead pollution in industrial neighborhoods, which can cause delinquent behavior and learning disabilities. Artistic creations occur throughout the entire process as communities participate and learn about the health hazards present and what can be done. All of this has been meticulously documented and, at the IEA, Donald intends to created books and digital prints from this project, educational material, and further edit video footage into completed works.
The Institute for Electronic Art’s Visiting Artist Program is sponsored in part by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature.
