Lecture by Stefan Kurten, Randall Chair

- Location: Holmes Auditorium, Harder Hall
(5:00 PM - 6:30 PM)
Stefan Kürten (born 1963) is a painter and musician who lives and works in Düsseldorf. He studied at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, where he was in the class of Michael Buthe (1944-94). Kürten later studied and taught at the Art Institute of San Francisco. In 2007, "Shadowtime," a survey of his paintings since 2001, was shown at Museum Haus Esters, Krefeld and the Royal Hibernian Academy, Dublin.

His paintings are included in the permanent collections of several European institutions as well as the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the Montreal Museum of Art. In 2011, he was the subject of a solo exhibition "Rainbows in the Dark" at Cosar HMT, Düsseldorf. Five of his paintings were included in "Gesamtkunstwerk, New Art From Germany" at the Saatchi Gallery, London in the spring of 2012. Kürten is represented by Alexander and Bonin in New York City.

"Stefan Kürten’s architecture-based compositions propose a new Germany growing over abandoned constructs and aspirations of a fading past, where memories are broken down and allowed to mutate into dizzying pattern and abstraction - and, notably, where man-made structures and nature are seen to coalesce." (Quoted from the Saatchi Gallery website)
