Time: 5:30 - 6:30 P.M.
Location: Room C, Binns-Merrill
Cost to Attend: Free/Open to Public
Sponsored By: School of Art & Design

During the Initial Horizon Period in the ancient Andes, the Cupisnique area located on the northern coast of Peru was an important and ethnically diverse center of trade. Engravings of head motifs on stirrup-spouted ceramic vessels served to legitimize Cupisnique cultural identity, social authority, and political ideology.

This presentation shows how the engraved head motifs on these vessels can be interpreted as cultural emblems, representing socio-political power at the individual level, and that they can be considered the historical signature of the Cupisnique people.
