Fort Building, a Community Workshop

Fort Building, a Community Workshop with Visiting Artist Damien Gilley

Location: The Hornell Community Arts Center, 58 Broadway Mall, Hornell
Date: Saturday, Aug. 30 and Sunday, Aug. 31
Time: Noon-5 P.M.
Cost to Attend: Free/Open to the Public

Parents and Kids! Come join us for a weekend of fun collaboration and group construction. Together we will use recycled cardboard, tape, and hot glue to build forts and other add-ons, altering the space inside the Hornell Community Art Center.

Children accompanied by adults or parents are encouraged. Kids will act as "foremen," giving verbal design, command, and descriptions of the forts and alterations while adult participants will serve as "workmen" helping to construct the forts and handling some building tools.

Schedule of Events:
Sat Aug. 30: Hornell Community Art Center
noon-1 p.m.: Damien will present a short lecture describing his past projects and introduce the group building
1 p.m.: Fort construction and tool demonstration
2-5 p.m.: Group building

Sunday Aug. 31: Hornell Community Art Center
noon-1 p.m.: Short overview of fort construction and tool demonstration
1-5 p.m.: Group building
5:30-7 p.m.: Public opening and display of community forts

Friday Sept. 5th: The Belfry - located at 406 Canisteo St., Hornell
7-10 p.m. Opening Reception of Damien Gilley’s Exhibition, "Elemental"

Artist Damien Gilley will be visiting from Portland, OR to install a site-specific art exhibition at The Belfry with an opening reception on Sept. 5 (7-10 p.m.).

Damien Gilley is a multi-disciplinary artist and educator in Portland, OR. His work has been exhibited nationally and internationally at venues including Tetem Kunstruimte (Enschede, Netherlands), EastWestProject (Berlin, DE), Suyama Space (Seattle), Las Vegas Art Museum, Bemis Center for Contemporary Art (Omaha, NE), Arthouse (Austin), the Art Museum of South Texas (Corpus Christi), and in Portland at Rocksbox, Linfield College, Wieden+Kennedy, the American Institute of Architects, the Pacific Northwest College of Art, and the Portland 2010 Biennial, among others.

His work has been reviewed by Artforum.com, the
Oregonian, Las Vegas Review Journal, the Austin Chronicle, Frame magazine, and New American Paintings. www.damiengilley.com
