Introduction
A grant is a form of gift assistance, usually based on financial need, that does not require repayment. Alfred has numerous grant and endowed scholarship programs that are available to students who show financial need. Other main sources of grant funding are the federal and various state governments. Students apply for these grant programs by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, Alfred University Financial Aid Application, and their home state's grant application.
Eligibility for University need-based aid is determined annually based on an analysis of the family's circumstances and financial information reported on the current year's financial aid applications. If the expected family contribution was higher than last year, then your financial need would be lower and, consequently, your aid eligibility may decrease. Likewise, if the expected family contribution was lower than last year, then your financial need would be higher, and your aid eligibility may increase. Numerous factors can affect the expected family contribution. The most common are changes in the number of family members in the household, the number of household members in college, or a significant change in parents' and student's income or assets. Another factor which could affect your aid eligibility is a change in external assistance such as Federal Pell Grant, state grants, or private scholarships.
Unless noted otherwise, students must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident to receive grant funding.
In compliance with federal and New York State regulations and University policies, Alfred University has established satisfactory progress standards for financial aid. Students must meet these standards to be eligible to receive federal, State, or University financial aid payments.
Academic Program Key for University Grants:
Alfred University is a private institution. However, some of our academic programs receive support from NY State. State-supported programs have a different tuition structure than the private college programs. In addition, the tuition structure varies among the private college programs. Therefore, the dollar value of University grant awards will vary depending on enrollment in a specific private college program or a State-supported program, and the student's NY State residency status.

Alfred University Housing Grant

Full-time matriculated undergraduate students residing in a University owned or operated residence facility. Applicants must demonstrate financial need and be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
Value:
Awards are made to supplement family, federal, and state resources.
How Determined:
Students must reside in a University owned or operated housing facility to receive this grant which is based on financial need. Awards may be renewed with an annual determination of need, housing status, and satisfactory academic performance.

Federal Pell Grant

Eligibility:
Matriculated undergraduates with exceptional financial need who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Applicants with a previous Bachelor's Degree are ineligible.
Value:
Annual awards up to $5,350. May be continued throughout college subject to annual review by application. Pell is limited to 18 semesters for first-time Pell Grant recipients on or after 7/1/2008.

Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (SEOG)

Matriculated undergraduate students enrolled at least half-time with exceptional financial need. Students must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents without a Bachelor's Degree.
Value:
At Alfred, annual awards range from $100 to $1,000. Funds are limited.

Administered by the Student Financial Aid Office, awards are based on financial need as determined through the Federal Need Analysis Methodology. Federal Pell Grant recipients receive priority.

Federal Academic Competitiveness (AC) Grant

To be eligible, a student must be: a U.S. citizen or a permanent resident, a Federal Pell Grant recipient, enrolled full-time in the first or second academic year of a degree program; and have completed a rigorous secondary program of study as defined by federal guidelines.
Value:
Annual awards range of up to $750 for the first academic year and up to $1,300 for the second academic year.
How Determined:
Alfred University will review all students for eligibility. Second year students must have at least a 3.0 cumulative grade point average.

Federal National Science and Mathematics Access to Retain Talent (SMART) Grant

To be eligible, a student must be: a U.S. citizen or a permanent resident, a Federal Pell Grant recipient, enrolled full-time in their third or fourth academic year in an eligible degree program; and have at least a 3.0 cumulative grade point average.
Value:
Annual awards range of up to $4,000 for the third and fourth academic years of study.
How Determined:
Alfred University will review all students enrolled in an eligible degree program each semester. Generally, at Alfred, eligible degree programs are Physical, Life or Computer Science, Engineering, and Mathematics.

New York State Tuition Assistance Program (TAP)

Eligibility:
New York State residents demonstrating financial need, as determined by the TAP analysis, who are enrolled full-time in an undergraduate degree program.
Value:
Full-time annual awards for undergraduates range from $500 to $5,000, or tuition, whichever is lower. Undergraduates are limited to eight semesters of payment. After the fourth semester payment, the annual award is reduced by $100.
How Determined:
New York State Higher Education Services Corporation evaluates applications and notifies recipients based on NYS taxable income which is adjusted for family members in full-time college attendance. Dependent full-time undergraduates with no other family members in college must have a New York State net taxable family income of $80,000 or less to qualify.

New York State Educational Opportunity Program (EOP)

Undergraduate New York State residents demonstrating educational and economic need who are enrolled in the State-supported programs. Students supported by EOP allocations must meet mandated economic guidelines and educational eligibility criteria at time of admission to AU to be eligible.
Value:
An average grant is $1,000 per year, limited to a total of ten semesters of payment.
How Determined:
Educational and economic criteria must be met as determined by the EOP Office, the Admissions Office, and the Student Financial Aid Office according to New York State EOP guidelines prior to enrollment at AU.
How to Apply:
Returning undergraduate students must have been admitted into EOP at time of admission to AU in order to receive EOP funding.
New York State Higher Educational Opportunity Program (HEOP)

Varies from state to state. Generally, students must be enrolled full-time and demonstrate financial need according to their state agency's formula. Students who are residents of Connecticut, Rhode Island, Vermont, Maryland, Michigan and the District of Columbia may use their state grants at Alfred University.
