Misture’s group studies the dynamic behavior of oxide ceramics and glasses related to energy conversion devices. Projects generally rely on detailed in-situ characterization using X-rays and neutrons to understand the relationships between structure and properties. Our recent work has focused on the effects of oxygen partial pressure and humidity on structure, phase stability, and conductivity.
Current work is focused on various components of solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) including the cathode, anode, and cathode-anode interactions. We recently completed ~7 years of study of glass sealants, both rigid and viscous, for planar SOFC geometries.
A second topical area is photocatalysis, where we're studying layered oxides from a (primarily) structural perspective. We have achieved recent breakthroughs in exfoliation of layered oxides to make oxide nanosheet suspensions, which we can then re-assemble into composites and 3-D mesostructured solids. The photoactivity of some of these solids is remarkable, with hydrogen evolution rates from methanol solutions among the highest ever reported without incorporating co-catalysts.
