International Students : Prospective AU International Students

Alfred University is a hidden gem in western New York state. If you haven't done so already, check out why so many students choose AU:

We are excited that you are interested in joining the Alfred community, whether you plan to come for a semester or a full degree! The Office of International Programs works with all international students once admitted to Alfred University - but first you must apply.

I want to participate in a Summer Course or Summer Workshop

We offer both Summer Courses (you earn university academic credits) and Summer Workshops (not-for-credit) during the summer session at Alfred University.

If you are already a degree-seeking student in the U.S. (with an existing F-1 visa): you are welcome to apply to both the Summer Courses and the Summer Workshops.

If you are not already an F-1 student, we are unable to sponsor F-1 visas for our summer programs. We encourage you to apply for our Summer Workshops, as you can attend our workshops while in the U.S. on a B-2 visitor visa (which allows "enrollment in a short recreational course of study, not for credit toward a degree, for example, a two-day cooking class while on vacation"). However, you are not able to take any course for academic credit.

I want to complete a full degree at AU

If you are an international student interested in coming to Alfred to seek a degree (first-year, transfer, or graduate students), you will apply through the Office of Admissions. Please see their Apply for Admission: International Students page for details.

I want to attend AU as an Exchange Student for a Semester or a Year

If you are interested in coming to Alfred as an Exchange Student from one of our Partner Universities, you will apply through the Office of International Programs. Applications are due by April 15th for the fall semester and October 15th for the spring semester.

To apply to come to Alfred as an exchange student:
Step 1 Find your home university on our list of partners: AU Exchange Partner Universities
Step 2 Secure nomination from your home university to participate in the exchange. This is typically an e-mail from the international office on your campus.
Step 3 Complete an Exchange Student Application, including listing 6-8 courses you would like to take at Alfred. To find out what classes will be offered during the semester you would like to attend, go to the class schedule where you will be able to find classes in each subject area. Classes for the following semester are usually posted by the middle of October for the Spring semester and the middle of March for the Fall semester.
Step 4 Collect your supporting documentation:
  • Proof of Health Insurance
Exchange students enter the United States on a J-1 visa. Since our student health insurance does meet J-1 visa requirements, you will be charged for our health insurance automatically, once you are accepted to our university. If you have adequate health insurance that meets the federal J-1 visa requirements, you will need to send proof of your coverage along with your application and any other required documents in order to be exempt from our coverage.
  • Proof of Financial Support
Students must provide a bank statement or a letter from their bank indicating they have the funds needed for their living expenses while at Alfred University. The estimated living expenses for the semester or year for which you are applying are provided on the application form.
  • A Copy of Your Passport
You will need to include a photocopy of the front page of your passport with your application.
  • Statement of Purpose
Please supply a brief statement (300-500 words) detailing your reasons for wanting to study at Alfred University, and the ways in which you think this experience will contribute to your current studies.
  • Academic Reference
Please ask your academic advisor or another professor at your home university who knows you well to write a letter on your behalf. Your international studies coordinator can include this letter with your application or the letter can be mailed directly to us.
  • Official Academic Transcript
Please be sure to send an official Academic Transcript with your initial application. This will be used in determining your academic level for course selection.
  • Portfolio (Art & Design students only)
Students planning to attend Alfred University's School of Art and Design must submit a CD with ten images of their work in the area of concentration they hope to pursue.
  • Additional materials may be requested by the specific college or school (AU's College of Liberal Arts & Sciences, College of Professional Studies, the School of Business, the School of Art & Design or the Inamori School of Engineering).
Step 5 Mail your application to Alfred University's Office of International Programs. Please do not e-mail your application, or any of your supporting documentation, as e-mail is not secure.
