In this building: Future home of the Gary Horowitz Center for Service Learning

This Victorian-era house at 10 Park Street will be converted into the residence for 8-10 students, plus an advisor, involved in a unique living/learning community. The Gary Horowitz Center for Service Learning in a joint venture by the Division of Academic Affairs and the Division of Student Affairs.

For 28 years, Dr. Gary Horowitz served Alfred University, first as a history professor, then alumni director and then as a development officer. In addition to his professional responsibilities, Dr. Horowitz served the community in myriad ways... as mayor, as publisher of The Alfred Sun, as a member of the Alfred Community Chest Board of Directors and as a member of numerous other civic and cultural groups.

To recognize Dr. Horowitz for his professional accomplishments, his level of service to the community and the friendship he freely gave to generations of Alfred University students, alumni are creating the Gary Horowitz Center for Service Learning at the University.

The Center will be a joint venture between Academic Affairs and Student Affairs. Students selected to participate will live together - a house at 10 Park Street will accommodate 8-10 students, as well as a coordinator who will oversee planning and execution of a year-long community service project. The coordinator will serve as the link between the academic program - what students learn in the classroom - and the community, creating the first living/learning community at AU.

Living/Learning environments, such as the Horowitz Center, will bring faculty and staff together in a residential setting. They allow development of a range of activities, from evening study groups to planned trips and speakers, all revolving around a central theme. Living/learning communities foster active learning, provide prompt feedback, maintain high expectations of performance in a personal environment and include diverse approaches to learning.
