Scholes Library is a special academic library that serves as an information resource for the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University, as well as for the greater international arts and sciences research community.

The library has an unparalleled collection of materials on ceramic art, science, engineering and technology, as well as extensive holdings in photography, sculpture, art history, glass art, electronic media and other areas of art and design.

A Special Collections room houses original theses, rare books and artists' books. Other facilities include a 24-hour study room; an extensive digital image library; audiovisual and computer data projection facilities for individual or group use; and original documents and photographs in the archives.

Scholes Library facilitates innovations in teaching, learning, and scholarship with additional spaces and services including:

  • Multi-media content creation facilities within the Fredrick Gibbs Research Commons
  • Creation of digital image teaching content in the Visual Resources and Image Digitization Department
  • A hands-on Information Literacy Instruction Lab
  • Touch screen, high speed document scanning equipment
  • Text to MP3 audio conversion equipment to assist learners with visual impairments or special academic needs

In the summer of 2011, Scholes Library introduced its popular "living room inspired" retreat: a technology-free lounge space designed for comfort, discussion, quiet study, and relaxation.
