Alfred University Environmental Studies Speakers Series focuses on Western New York waterways

This week’s Environmental Studies Speakers Series at Alfred University will focus on the health of Western New York’s waterways.

Organizers of the Future Innovators Summit (FIS) think tank, part of the Ars Electronica Festival 2017, held Sept 7-10 in Linz, Austria, by coincidence invited Amy Karle and Ben Julian to be panelists. What the organizers did not realize at the time was that the two were classmates – both 2002 graduates of Alfred University’s School of Art & Design – and that they are married to each other.

Five to join Alfred University Hall of Fame

Five former star student-athletes will be inducted into the Alfred University Athletics Hall of Fame Saturday, Sept. 23. The University announced that Laura (Carlin) Loehle'85 (women's swimming and diving), Sean McCartney '93 (men's basketball), Brenton Brady '06 (football), Bobby Linaberry '07 (men's soccer) and Brandon Striker '07 (men's swimming and diving), will make up the 2017 Hall of Fame class. The five will be inducted during an on-campus ceremony Saturday, Sept. 23, during Homecoming Weekend.

Three new American Ceramic Society Fellows have Alfred University ties

Three of the 15 members of the 2017 Class of Fellows for the American Ceramic Society (ACerS) have Alfred University connections. They will be installed during the ACerS awards banquet held in conjunction with the Materials Science and Tehcnology annual meeting in Pittsburgh, Oct. 8-12.

Alfred University Bergren Forum explores betrayal and migration themes in Cuban film

Erin Redmond, associate professor of Modern Languages in the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences at Alfred University, will discuss the themes of migration and betrayal in Cuban films during the Sept. 28 Bergren Forum.

Ellen Bahr: Something from Nothing Alfred University faculty, students to exhibit work in Southern Tier Biennial

Forty-one artists from across the Southern Tier of New York will exhibit their work in the 2017 Southern Tier Biennial, which opens Saturday, Sept. 23, in Olean. Nine of the 41 are faculty, staff, students or alumni of Alfred University.

Alfred University President Mark Zupan to speak at The Harley School, Rochester

Mark Zupan, who has been the 14th president of Alfred University since July 2016, will deliver a lecture on his recently published book, “Inside Job: How Government Insiders Subvert the Public Interest,” from 6:30 – 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 27, in The Commons at The Harley School in Rochester.

Melanie Meighan and Matt Finley Powering the future: Alfred University adds hydrogen fuel cell capability for research, education

Alfred University’s Inamori School of Engineering has added equipment that will allow students and researchers in the Inamori School of Engineering to expand their knowledge of hydrogen fuel cells as part of the renewable energy engineering curriculum.

Herrick Library to host Team Trivia night

Get your team together and put your thinking caps on. Alfred University’s Herrick Memorial Library will host its first Team Trivia Night of the fall semester from 8 to 10 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 30 in the library’s Bookend Lounge.
