Alfred University football team to welcome 60 new recruits 6/14/07
ALFRED, NY — The Alfred University football team will welcome approximately 60 recruits this fall. Among the newcomers are seven former New York State all-stars: quarterback Dan Fetter of Westhill; linebackers Alex Hamilton of Corning East and Matt McCarthy of West Valley; tailback Jeremy Darron of Caledonia-Mumford; wide receiver Ryan Thon of Victor; offensive tackle Zach Morgan of Homer; and defensive end D.J. Loughlin-Pope of Corning East.
Following are the all-state recruits who will join the Saxon program this fall: • Dan Fetter, 5-9, 170, quarterback, Westhill High School. He was a Second Team New York State Class B all-star in 2006 and an honorable mention All-Central New York selection. • Zach Morgan, 6-4, 280, offensive tackle, Homer High School. He was a Second Team New York State Class C all-star in 2006. He also was named a Second Team All-Central New York all-star and was a First Team all-league selection. • Alex Hamilton, 6-0, 185, linebacker, Corning East High School. He was a Second Team New York State Class A all-star in 2006, when his team won the state Class A championship. • D.J. Loughlin-Pope, 6-1, 230, defensive end, Corning East High School. He was a Second Team New York State Class A all-star as an offensive lineman in 2006, when his team won the state Class A championship. He was also selected to play in the Ernie Davis Classic all-star game. • Ryan Thon, 6-0, 190, wide receiver, Victor High School. He was a Third Team New York State Class A all-star in 2006. • Jeremy Darron, 6-0, 205, tailback/outside linebacker, Caledonia-Mumford High School. He comes to AU via transfer from SUNY Brockport, where he was a tailback the last two seasons. He was a First Team New York State Class C all-star and an all-Greater Rochester First Team pick as a high school senior in 2004. • Matt McCarthy, 6-2, 210, linebacker, West Valley High School. He was a Second Team New York State Class D all-star in 2006, when he was also named a Big 30 all-star. Other key recruits to AU include: • Phil Tarvido, 6-0, 270, offensive lineman, Depew (NY) High School. He was a Third Team All-Western New York lineman and a First Team Class B league all-star in 2006. He was also the fifth-ranked heavyweight wrestler in Section VI last year. • Matt Dunkle, 5-11, 170, quarterback, Frontier High School, Hamburg, NY. He was a Second Team All-League Class AA South all-star in 2006. • DeMario Johnson, 5-10, 160, wide receiver, St. Joseph’s High School, Buffalo. He was a First Team Monsignor Martin, Class AA, all-star in 2006. • Bryan Sharf, 6-0, 190, linebacker, Ellicottville (NY) High School. He was a First Team All-League Class D East selection in 2006. • Adam Schutz, 6-1, 215, defensive end, Geneva (NY) High School. He was a First Team all-league selection for the 2006 New York State Class B champs. • Dan Bassage, 6-1, 240, offensive lineman/linebacker, Hornell (NY) High School. • Steve Hutchins, 5-11, 240, center, Webster Schroeder High School, Webster, NY. He was a team captain as a senior in 2006. • Jeff Vandewalker, 6-1, 240, offensive lineman, Cicero-North Syracuse (NY) High School. He was a Second Team All-Central New York all-star and a team captain in 2006. • Greg Langtry, 6-0, 185, quarterback, Moravia (NY) High School. The leading passer in Section IV in 2006, he was a First Team Section and League all-star. He also served as a team captain and was his team’s MVP. • Max Higgins, 6-0, 170, defensive back, Saratoga Springs (NY) High School. He was a two-time Section II Class AA First Team defensive all-star (2005 and 2006). • Roland O’Brien, 5-10, 150, quarterback/defensive back, Hoosick Falls (NY) High School. He was the Section II Class C Player of the Year, a First Team All-League selection and the Central Division MVP as a quarterback his senior year of 2006. • Andrew Draina, 6-1, 255, noseguard, Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake (NY) High School. He was a First Team Albany-area Class A defensive lineman as a senior last fall. • Jeff Velardo, 5-9, 190, strong safety, Waverly (NY) High School. He was a First Team Section IV all-star as a senior in 2006 and played in the Ernie Davis Classic all-star game. • Nick Furnia, 5-11, 180, tailback, Beekmantown (NY) High School. He was a First Team all-league selection who rushed for more than 1,100 yards as a senior in 2006. • Jack McCann, 5-8, 170, tailback, Fairview (PA) High School. He was the Pennsylvania Region 4 Player of the Year and earned First Team all-league honors after rushing for more than 1,350 yards as a senior in 2006. • Greg Caraway, 5-1-0, 225, center, Lawrenceville (NY) High School. |
