Student Expenses Are To Be Supported from Bernstein Travel Fund

Alfred University students interested in joining the Spring Break Service Trip to Haiti still have time to reserve a spot.

Students must submit an application by January 10 to Dean Nancy Evangelista (, who may be contacted for further details. Generous support from the Bernstein Travel Fund has resulted in lowering the individual student cost of the trip to $1,200 to $1,600, and a $800 deposit must be submitted by Jan. 13.

The Haiti Spring Break Service Trip follows an Alfred University campus-wide effort to raise more than $15,000 for the construction of a water pump station in the Pignon region of Haiti. Student service work will include clearing brush, painting, raking gravel, and furniture assembly. Additional activities may include visits to dams, irrigation systems, schools or an American orphanage, a sugar cane mill, church services, and shopping.

To apply, students are asked to write an essay describing their reasons for joining the trip, their goals and a description of any participation to date in Alfred University’s Water for Haiti project. Additionally, students must provide at least one letter of recommendation or the names of two references, and must not be on academic or disciplinary probation.

The Spring Break Service Trip to Haiti is scheduled from March 2 through Sunday, March 12. Participants will fly from Buffalo to Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., then to Port au Prince, Haiti. They will reside at the Kay Viste Guesthouse in Pignon for seven nights before returning to Ft. Lauderdale and Buffalo on March 12. Alfred University vans will provide transportation from the campus to and from Buffalo/Niagara International Airport.
