Glass scientist to present Scholes Lecture April 6
C. Austen Angell, a Regents’ Professor in Arizona State University’s (ASU) School of Molecular Sciences, will deliver the annual Samuel R. Scholes Sr. Lecture at Alfred University April 6.
The Scholes Lecture, presented annually by an outstanding glass scientist, engineer or scholar, honors Samuel R. Scholes, Sr., who founded the glass science and engineering program at Alfred University nearly 70 years ago. This year’s lecture is presented at 11:20 a.m. Thursday, April 6, in Holmes Auditorium, Harder Hall on the Alfred University campus. His talk is sponsored by the Inamori School of Engineering. It is open to the public, free of charge.
Angell’s lecture is entitled, “Fundamental aspects of supercooled liquids and the glass transition.” His research interests lie mainly in supercooled liquids and glasses, particularly water and ionic liquids, but he also works on batteries and fuel cells, and occasionally biomolecules.
He holds B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees from the University of Melbourne, Australia, and a Ph.D. degree from Imperial College London. After a postdoctoral position at Argonne National Laboratory, he joined Purdue University where he became full professor in 1971. In 1989 he moved to ASU.
Angell has authored some 530 research papers and reviews, over 100 of which have been cited over 100 time (Google Scholar H index = 101). His work has been honored by awards from four different technical societies - The American Ceramics Society (1991, Morey), The American Chemical Society (2004, Hildebrand), The Materials Research SocietyMRS (2006,Turnbull) and The ElectroChemical Society (2010, Bredig). In 1999 a special issue of J. Phys. Chem. was dedicated to his efforts in science. He received an "Outstanding Reviewer Award" from the American Physics Society (2011).
