Alfred University music students to present recital April 9

Alfred University students will present a recital at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 9, in Howell Hall on the Alfred University campus.

            They are students of Laurel Buckwalter, instructor in music, who teaches piano and accompanies performances;  Daisey Wu, visiting associate professor of music, who teaches the Guzheng, a traditional Chinese stringed instrument, and Boris VanDruff, who teaches voice.

            The performance is open to the public, free of charge.  The recital had originally been scheduled for Miller Theater, but it has been moved to Howell Hall.

            Performing on the Guzheng, a traditional Chinese stringed instrument, are students in Daisey Wu’s level one class. They include: Ruggiany Georges, a first-year student from Brooklyn; Louis Jarzabek, a sophomore from Conesus, NY; Michel Nacipucha, a senior from Brooklyn; Bridgette Winicki, a senior from Cuba, NY; and Ziwei Zhou, a special student from China. They will play “Yee Mong Mountain Song,” a Shan Dong folk song; and “Under the Silver Moonlight,” a Tataer Tribe folk song.

            Students in the Guzheng level two class will perform “Waves Wash Sand,” Han Dynasty music arranged by Xaing Sihua, and “Golden Sun in Beijing,” a Tibetian folk song. Performers include: Denise Espinoza, a senior from the Bronx, and Brandon Miller, a junior from Piscataway, NJ, as well as  Yijun Wang and Yonghuan Zong, special students from China.

            Summer Markajani, a senior from Rochester, will be performing “Allegro in F Major,” by Ferdinand Beyer, and “Yellow Bird,” a West Indies folk song, arranged by Faber; Ashley Lascano, a sophomore from the Bronx, “Ice Skaters Waltz” by Walteufel, arranged by Faber. She will also join Buckwalter for “Sleeping Beauty Waltz” by Tchaikovsky, arranged by Faber, and written as a piece for piano for four hands.   

            Kenna Lynn, a senior from Malvern, PA, will play “Avril 14” by Aphex Twin; Matthew Finley, a senior from Holland, NY, “Everglow” by Coldplay; Jaime McClintock, a first-year student from Granville, OH, “Theme from Jurassic Park,” by John Williams, arranged by Faber; Madison Muehl, junior from Millport, NY, “Solfeggietto” by C.P.E. Bach and Samantha Diaz, junior from Brewster, NY, “ Butterfly Waltz,” by Brian Crain.

            Vocal students performing are Richard Beam, a first-year student from Hornell, “Johanna” from Sweeney Todd by Stephen Sondheim; Jamie Vaughan-Williams, “O Isis and Osiris” from The Magic Flute by W.A. Mozart; and Peter Hoskins, a senior from Newfield, NY, “My Friends” from Sweeney Todd, and “Let Beauty Awake” by Ralph Vaughn Williams.

            Rounding out the program will be piano performances by Weixin Li, a sophomore from China, and Buckwalter, “Dolly’s Garden” by Gabriel Faure; Theresa Kenney, senior from Wheatfield, NY, “Intermezzo, Op. 118, No. 2” by Brahms, and Kenney and Buckwalter, “Allegro from Sonata in D Major” by Beethoven.
