Alumna earns first place in age class in California marathon
Elisabeth Phillips-Jones ’12 finished the Hombolt Bay Marathon last month with a time of 3:15:09, earning her the 18th spot overall. She was second among women of all ages, and first among women ages 25-29. The race was in Eureka, CA, on Aug. 13.
Bill Sortore, Alfred University’s track and field coach, was not surprised by “PJ’s” results. “She lives to run, and long runs are her favorite. It is no surprise that she is finding success at the marathon. She can handle the type of training it takes to be successful.”
Elisabeth participated in cross-country, and both indoor and outdoor track and field all four years at Alfred. She was captain for all three sports in her junior and senior years. She is a former school record-holder in the 10k.
She now makes her home in Grants Pass, OR, and last year hosted a few Alfred University alumni for the U.S. Olympic trials.
