Figuring it out: Alfred University math professor to present Bergren Forum Sept. 21
Amanda Taylor, an instructor in mathematics in the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences at Alfred University, will deliver the Bergren Forum at 12:10 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 21, in Nevins Theater, Powell Campus Center, on the University campus.
In her talk, she will “introduce notions in higher-level mathematics by analogy to language, problems encountered in daily life, and simple mathematics learned in grade school.”
She said she will demonstrate how to apply those concepts “to sketch a picture of ideas and results” from her research in group theory. “No prior knowledge is assumed, so this is a great opportunity to get a glimpse into the mysterious world of research mathematics,” Taylor said.
The Bergren Forum, hosted by the Division of Human Studies, is held each Thursday during the academic year. The series is open to the public, free of charge. Those attending may bring their own lunches; coffee and tea are provided.
