Saxons even Empire 8 mark with win at Harwick

ONEONTA, NY -- Sophomore point guard Gary Kwiecien (Perry, NY/Perry) scored a career-high 24 points to lead four players in double figures as the Alfred University men's basketball team beat host Hartwick College, 89-82, Friday night.

With the win, Alfred evens its overall recored at 6-6 and improves to 2-2 in Empire 8 play.

AU shot 56-percent from the field and won in large part due to 54 percent (16 of 29) shooting from three-point range. AU made 11 three pointers in the first half as the Saxons jumped out to a 49-41 lead at intermission. The solid longe-range shooting helped the Saxons overcome 53 percent shooting (nine of 17) from the foul line and a slight 30-25 rebounding disadvantage.

Kwiecien added eight assists, five boards and a pair of steals. Junior guard Bobby Barry (Duanesburg, NY/Duanseburg) made six three-pointers and scored 22, while senior forward Carl Embury (Perry, NY/Perry) made five longe-range shots to finish with 21 points and six rebounds. Sophomore guard Mike Stopera (Scotia, NY/Scotia-Glenville) tallied 18 points.

Jan Cocozziello netted 22 points to pace Hartwick. Albert Hulick and A.J. Beaulieu netted 17 and 14 points, respectively, for the Hawks.

Alfred is in action next at 4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 11, at Utica.
