AU swimming and diving teams sweep host Utica

UTICA, NY — The Alfred University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams swept host Utica College in an Empire 8 Conference dual meet Friday afternoon.

With the 159-66 win, the AU men improve to 6-0 overall and 4-0 in Empire 8, and have now won 27 consecutive dual meets dating back to February 2006. The Saxons will try to tie the school record for consecutive dual meet wins (28) when they take on host LeMoyne Saturday (Jan. 17) at 1 p.m.

The Alfred women won, 136-73, for the team’s first Empire 8 Conference win of the season. The Lady Saxons are now 3-4 overall and 1-3 in Empire 8 meets.

The Alfred women were led by sophomore Calista Merritt (Conesus, NY/Livonia), who won the 1,000-yard freestyle and 500-yard freestyle; sophomore Sarah Blair (Auburn, NY/Auburn), winner in the 50-yard and 100-yard freestyle; and senior Jessie Caccamo (Ballston Lake, NY/Shenendehowa), who took the 200-yard free and 100-yard butterfly.

Other winners for the AU women were freshman Donna Hoops (Geneseo, NY/Geneseo) in the 100-yard backstroke; senior Amy Buisman (Rochester, NY/Penfield) in the 200-yard individual medley; and sophomore Elyse Caldwell (Endwell, NY/Maine-Endwell) in 3-meter diving.

The AU women swept the relays, with Hoops, Buisman, junior Meghan Jones (Beaver Falls, NY/Beaver River) and senior Brynja Seagren (Bradford, PA/Bradford) winning the 200-yard medley relay and Blair, Caccamo, Jones and Merritt claiming the 200-yard free relay.

The AU women will also take on host LeMoyne at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Junior Kameron Chambliss (Alfred Station, NY/Alfred-Almond) swept the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events to pace the AU men against Utica.

Other individual event winners for the Saxons were senior Tyler Monroe (Conesus, NY/Livonia) in the 1,000-yard free; junior Andrew Brisson (Greeenwich, CT/Greenwich) in the 200-yard free; senior Pat Grimmer (Bath, NY/Haverling) in the 50-yard free; senior Scott Sarkissian (Oswego, NY/Oswego) in the 200-yard IM; sophomore Tyler Olsen (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga) in the 100-yard butterfly; sophomore Dan Steere (Hornell, NY/Alfred-Almond) in the 100-yard free; senior Mark Baker (Weedsport, NY/Weedsport) in the 100-yard backstroke; senior Matt Baker (Weedsport, NY/Weedsport) in the 500-yard free; and senior Brian Agro (Gray, ME/Cheverus) in the 100-yard breaststroke.

Sophomore Matt Lobban (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford-Mendon), Agro, freshman Andrew Moragne (Cleveland, OH/University) and Steere won the 200-yard medley relay, while Olsen, Moragne, Brisson and Mark Baker teamed to win the 200-yard free relay.
