Pfeifer earns combined honors as AU women’s ski team wins season opener

TRUXTON, NY — The Alfred University women’s Alpine ski team opened its 2009 season with a win at Labrador Mountain. The weekend races, held Saturday and Sunday, were hosted by Ithaca College. Alfred’s men’s team placed fifth.

The AU women placed first in the team standings in both giant slalom and slalom. Junior Lauren Pfeifer (Livonia, NY/Livonia) picked up where she left off last season. The defending USCSA Mideast Region and Empire Division champion and two-time All-American swept the giant slalom and slalom races to finish as the meet’s individual combined champion.

Sophomore Elissa DeGolyer (Silver Springs, NY/Letchworth), an All-American as a freshman in 2008, placed third overall in the combined individual standings, taking second in the giant slalom and fifth in the slalom. Senior Rachel Beckwith (Landgrove, VT/Stratton Mountain) was fifth in each of the races, while sophomore Megan Caggianelli (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) was 11th and 14th, respectively, in giant slalom and slalom.

The men’s team took fifth in both the GS and slalom on its way to taking fifth in the combined team standings. The Saxons were led by senor Joel Buchanan (Almond, NY/Scio), who was fifth in the giant slalom and seventh in the slalom. Freshman Steven Barton (Dansville, NY/Dansville) was 24th in the GS, while freshman V.J. Brick (Batavia, NY/Batavia) took 20th in the slalom.

The AU men were competing without seniors Robbie Ryminski (Warwick, NY/Warwick Valley) and Chet Farnum (Farmington, ME/Mt. Blue). The duo, starters each of the last three years, will rejoin the team at the AU-hosted races at Swain, Jan. 24 and 25.
