AU women’s ski team wins at Swain; Saxon men’s team places fifth

SWAIN, NY — The Alfred University women’s Alpine ski team won top honors and the AU men’s team took fifth at the AU-hosted races Saturday and Sunday at Swain Ski Resort.

The Alfred women, a week after sweeping the giant slalom and slalom at Labrador, finished behind the University of Buffalo in Saturday’s GS at Swain before bouncing back Sunday with a win in the slalom. Junior Lauren Pfeifer (Livonia, NY/Livonia) paced the Lady Saxons, finishing second in the giant slalom and first in the slalom. She took first in the combined individual standings for a second straight week.

Sophomore Elissa DeGolyer (Silver Springs, NY/Letchworth) took second in the slalom and fourth in the GS to finish third in the combined standings. Senior Rachel Beckwith (Landgrove, VT/Stratton Mountain) was fifth in the slalom and 10th in the GS, while sophomore Megan Caggianelli (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) was 16th and 15th, respectively, in giant slalom and slalom.

The men’s team took sixth in the giant slalom and fifth in the slalom to finish fifth overall, the same as last weekend. Senior Joel Buchanan (Almond, NY/Scio) took 16th in the slalom and freshman Steven Barton (Dansville, NY/Dansville) was 19th in the GS and 25th in the slalom to lead the Saxons. Freshman Harrison Hendricks (Sodus, NY/Sodus) was 18th and 27th, respectively, in the slalom and GS.

Seniors Robbie Ryminski (Warwick, NY/Warwick Valley) and Chet Farnum (Farmington, ME/Mt. Blue), who missed the races at Labrador last weekend, finished 20th in the giant slalom and 35th in the slalom, respectively. Ryminski was also 27th in the slalom.

AU is in action next on Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 31 and Feb. 1, at Bristol Mountain, hosted by Rochester.
