AU women’s basketball team drops 48-35 decision at Nazareth

PITTSFORD, NY – Poor shooting did in the Alfred University women’s basketball team as the Lady Saxons dropped a key Empire 8 matchup at Nazareth College Tuesday evening.

Alfred shot only 17 percent from the floor and fell 48-35, despite holding the host Golden Flyers to 29 percent shooting. Nazareth dominated the boards, outrebounding Alfred, 52-37. With the loss, AU falls to 8-7 overall, 3-5 in the Empire 8.

The Lady Saxons came into the contest a half-game behind Nazareth (10-6, 4-3 Empire 8) for fourth place in the Empire 8 Conference. The top four teams in the final Empire 8 standings will qualify for the conference championship tournament.

Sophomore point guard Lyndsay Murphy (Almond, NY/Hornell) led Alfred with 10 points, four rebounds and a pair of assists. Sophomore guard Lisa Button (Troupsburg, NY/Jasper-Troupsburg) and freshman guard Christina Jordan (Cornwall-on-the-Hudson, NY/Cornwall) each scored five points for AU, while senior forward Melanie Jackson (Andover, NY/Wellsville) had a game-high seven rebounds.

Brittany Wilson had 12 points and nine rebounds to pace Nazareth. Lizzie Barlow (seven rebounds) and Kelly Dunne (three assists) each netted seven points for the winners.

Alfred is in action next on Wednesday, Jan. 28, at 7 p.m. at home against non-conference foe Houghton College.
