AU women's basketball falls, 68-56, to visiting Houghton

ALFRED, NY -- Poor shooting and ful trouble hampered the Alfred University women’s basketball team, as the Lady Saxons fell, 68-56, to visiting Houghton College Wednesday evening at the McLane Center.

Alfred shot only 34 percent from the field compared to 40 percent for Houghton. The Highlanders shot 50 percent (seven of 14) from three-point range in the first half as they built a 39-22 lead at intermission.

AU (8-8, 3-5 Empire 8) held its own on the glass as Houghton held a slight 46-40 rebounding advantage. Alfred committed 24 fouls, to only 13 for Houghton, which made 15 free throws in 30 attempts to five in 13 tries for AU.

Sophomore point guard Lyndsay Murphy (Almond, NY/Hornell) paced Alfred with 13 points, eight assists and four rebounds. Freshman guard Christina Jordan (Cornwall-on-the-Hudson, NY/Cornwall) tallied 12 points and seven rebounds. Senior guard Melanie Jackson (Andover NY/Wellsville) chipped in with six points, two blocks, three steals and five rebounds. Junior forward Hannah Meier (Rochester, NY/Greece Odyssey) had five points, five rebounds and three steals, while junior guard Lisa Button (Troupsburg, NY/Jasper-Troupsburg) had eight points.

Leah French led Houghton (7-9) with 22 points and five assists. Ashley Dupler contributed 20 points, 12 rebounds and four assists.

Alfred is in action next on Saturday, Jan. 31, at 1 p.m at home against non-conference opponent, College of New Rochelle.
