Alfred University women’s basketball defeats RIT, 58-55
AU held off a furious rally by the Tigers, who nearly came back from an 18-point deficit with 13 minutes left, trimming the AU lead to one point, 56-55, with 26 seconds to go. After RIT missed a shot that would have given them the lead, junior forward Hannah Meier (Rochester, NY/Greece Odyssey) sunk a pair of free throws with nine seconds left to seal the victory for the Lady Saxons.
The Lady Saxons (10-8, 4-5 Empire 8) held a slight rebounding edge over RIT, 45-42, and narrowly outshot RIT from the floor, 37 percent to 36 percent. AU shot 33 percent (five of 15) from three-point range to only 15 percent (two of 13) for RIT (3-17, 0-11 Empire 8). The host Tigers hurt themselves at the free throw line, connecting on only 11 of 24 attempts.
Alfred was led by sophomore point guard Lyndsay Murphy (Almond, NY/Hornell) who finished with a game-high 27 points (on 11-of-23 shooting), 10 assists and four steals. Senior forward Melanie Jackson (Andover, NY/Wellsville) netted 10 points, a team-high of 14 boards and two steals. Freshmen guard Christina Jordan (Cornwall-on-Hudson, NY/Cornwall) made three from long range on her way to 11 points and six rebounds, while junior guard Abbey Schaffnit (Bemus Point, NY/ Maple Grove) had four points, three assists and three rebounds.
The Tigers (3-17, 0-11 Empire 8) were led by Sharon Dennis who had 21 points, 14 rebounds and four blocks. Also for RIT, Charley ScottMcGrail finished with 20 points and six rebounds.
AU is in action next on Friday, Feb 6, at 6 p.m at Empire 8 foe Stevens Institute of Technology.
