AU Western equestrian team competes in two weekend shows

PITTSFORD, NY -- The Alfred University Western equestrian team competed Sunday in a pair of shows hosted by SUNY Oswego and held at Lehman Farms in Pittsford. AU won the first show and was runner-up in the second.

The following Saxon riders earned first-place ribbons in the first show: senior Katie Mix (Warsaw, NY/Warsaw)in open reining; junior Kristen Kovatch (Lansdale, PA/North Penn) in advanced horsemanship; junior Michelle Applebaum (Applegate, CA/Maidu)in novice horsemanship; sophomore Kayla Summerville (Fairport, NY/Fairport)in intermediate horsemanship II; and senior Natalie Gilbert (Potsdam, NY/Parishville-Hopkinton)in beginner horsemanship.

Mix also took second in open horsemanship; freshman Erin Moseley (Cazenovia, NY/Cazenovia) placed second in intermediate horsemanship II, and junior Alicia Pickett-Hale (Concord, NH/Concord) was second in advanced horsemanship.

In the second show, AU got wins from senior Theresa Wills (Ransomville, NY/Lewiston-Porter) in open horsemanship, junior Kate West (Pavilion, NY/Pavilion) in advanced horesmanship and Danielle Wiemer (Lima, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima) in novice horsemanship.

The following Saxon riders earned second-place ribbons: Kovatch in advanced horsemanship; senior Noelle Orlowski (Wilson, NY/Mt. St. Mary), sophomore Marie MacKellar (Canisteo, NY/Manheim Township) and junior Natalie Grow (Hyde Park, NY/Our Lady of Lourdes) in novice horsemanship; freshman Katie LeSuer (Edinboro, PA/Cambridge Springs) and junior Jess Kulik (Winslow, ME/Winslow) in intermediate horsemanship II; and senior Wanetu Tarrant (Southampton, NY/Darrow) in beginner horsemanship.

The AU Western team competes next at two shows Saturday, Feb. 14, at Cazenovia. AU is in first place in the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) Zone II, Region II standings. The Saxons are the defending regional champion.
