AU women’s basketball team comes up short against Stevens
Both teams struggled from the field in the first half -- AU shot 35 percent to 31 percent for Stevens – and the score was tied 30-30 at intermission. Stevens outshot AU, 45 percent to 30 percent, in the second half as the host Ducks outscored the Saxons, 29-22, to secure a sweep of the season series. AU forced 19 Stevens turnovers, limiting its own miscues to 12, but the host Ducks enjoyed a 45-36 rebounding advantage and made nine three-point shots.
Alfred (10-9, 4-6 Empire 8) was led by sophomore point guard Lyndsay Murphy (Almond, NY/Hornell) who made six three-pointers en route to a game-high 20 points. She also pulled down eight rebounds and dished out two assists. Also scoring in double figures was senior forward Melanie Jackson (Andover, NY/Wellsville), who netted 12 points to go with four steals and two rebounds. Freshmen guard Christina Jordan (Cornwall-on-Hudson, NY/Cornwall) contributed seven points and seven rebounds and junior forwards Libby and Hannah Meier (Rochester, NY/Greece Odyssey) each pulled down eight rebounds.
Stevens (17-3, 9-2 Empire 8) was led by Dani Dudek, who netted 11 points, 12 rebounds and seven assists. Brittany Fuller chipped in with a double-double, scoring 10 points and grabbing 12 rebounds.
AU is in action next on Sunday, Feb, 8, at noon at conference foe Ithaca College.
