Indie-inspired acts to perform Valentine's Day program in Knight Club
The indie-inspired acts of Fujiya & Miyagi with School of Seven Bells will be performing at Alfred University on Saturday, Feb. 14, at 10 p.m. in the Knight Club, Powell Campus Center. Admission for this event is free of charge.
The team of Fujiya & Miyagi got their start in 2000 as an electronic duo of David Best (guitars and vocals) and Steve Lewis (synths, beats, programming).
In 2002, they released their first record titled “Electro Karaoke in The Negative Style,” which is an electronic set that focuses on the distinctive vocals of Best. In 2004, they added Matt Hainsby to play bass guitar for the group and since have released many EPs and two more albums titled “Transparent Things,” in 2006, and “Light Bulbs” in 2008.
School of Seven Bells began in 2004 as collaboration between Benjamin Curtis of Secret Machines, and sisters Alejandra and Claudia Deheza of On-Air Library! while the bands were on tour with each other. The unique name for their band arose from a show about the School of Seven Bells which is a mythical South American pickpocket academy that may have existed in the ’80s.
Fujiya & Miyagi’s style is unique in that it strays from lyrical themes but rather uses synthesizers to create rhythms which sound like modern symphonies, whereas gentle guitar and jagged beats along with smooth vocals and synthesizers define the music of the School of Seven Bells.
