AU Alpine ski teams compete at Cornell; Saxon women place second, men fifth

TRUXTON, NY, NY — The Alfred University men’s and women’s Alpine ski teams competed over the weekend in races hosted by Cornell University. The AU women placed second overall, while the Alfred men took fifth.

The AU women began with weekend with a win in the giant slalom Saturday at Greek Peak in Cortland. The Lady Saxons stumbled in Sunday’s slalom at Labrador Mountain in Truxton, finishing fifth and dropping them to second in the combined team standings.

Junior Lauren Pfeifer (Livonia, NY/Livonia) led the Alfred women, winning the GS and slalom to finish first in the combined individual standings for the third time in four events this season. Sophomore Elissa DeGolyer (Silver Springs, NY/Letchworth) was second in the giant slalom, fourth in the slalom and third overall. Sophomore Megan Caggianelli (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) was 12th in the giant slalom.

The Alfred men took fifth in the GS and sixth in the slalom to finish fifth overall. Freshmen Steve Jervis (Attica, NY/Attica) and Harrison Hendricks (Sodus, NY/Sodus) paced the Saxon effort. Jervis took iith in the giant slalom Saturday and Hendricks was 11th in Sunday’s slalom.

Freshman Steve Barton (Dansville, NY/Dansville) was 16th and 19th, respectively, in the giant slalom and slalom, while senior Robbie Ryminski (Warwick, NY/Warwick Valley) was 20th in the GS.

AU is in action next on Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 14-15, at Toggenburg Mountain in Fabius, NY. The races are hosted by Syracuse University.
