2/10/09

ALFRED, NY — Senior forward Melanie Jackson (Andover, NY/Wellsville) scored 18 points, including the 1,000th of her career, as the Alfred University women’s basketball team defeated visiting Nazareth, 65-38, Tuesday evening.

The Lady Saxons (11-10, 5-7 Empire 8) committed only 10 turnovers while forcing Nazareth into 27 miscues, which helped AU overcome a 42-33 rebounding disadvantage. Alfred outshot the visitors, 40-percent to 22-percent, and connected on 77 percent of its free throws. With the win, AU splits the season series with Nazareth moves into a tie with the Golden Flyers for fifth place in the Empire 8.

Sophomore point guard Lyndsay Murphy (Almond, NY/Hornell) scored 15 points (with three three-pointers), dished out six assists and pulled down six rebounds for AU. Freshmen guard Christina Jordan (Cornwall-on-Hudson, NY/Cornwall) finished with 11 points and five boards. Junior guard Lisa Button (Troupsburg, NY/Jasper-Troupsburg) netted eight points, three rebounds and two steals and junior forward Libby Meier (Rochester, NY/Greece Odyssey) led the team with nine rebounds.

Jackson, who also had six steals, now has 1,001 career points. The AU career leader in steals, Jackson went over the 500-rebound mark for her career earlier this year and is now one of only four players in team history to eclipse 1,000 points and 500 rebounds in a career.

Nazareth was led by Brittany Wilson, who scored nine points and pulled down 12 boards. Sally Wilcox contributed eight points.

AU is in action next on Friday, Feb 13, at 6 p.m. when they Lady Saxons travel to conference opponent Elmira.
