AU women’s basketball team comes up short against Hartwick

ALFRED, NY -- The Alfred University women’s basketball team lost a pivotal Empire 8 Conference game to visiting Hartwick, 51-41, Friday evening at the McLane Center.

AU (12-12, 6-9 Empire 8) needed wins in its last two games, against Hartwick and Saturday against Utica, and two St. John Fisher losses, to earn the fourth and final bid to the Empire 8 Conference championship tournament. Fisher fell Friday to Utica, but with the AU loss the Cardinals get the fourth spot in the conference tournament.

Friday’s game was close at halftime, with Hartwick holding a slim 25-23 advantage. Free throws proved to be the Saxons’ undoing in the second half, as Hartwick made 13 foul shots after intermission to only one by AU. Alfred was also hurt on the boards, as Hartwick outrebounded the Lady Saxons, 40-26.

Alfred was paced by sophomore point guard Lyndsay Murphy (Almond, NY/Hornell), who scored 10 points. Junior forward Hannah Meier (Rochester, NY/Greece Odyssey) scored six points and recorded a team-high six rebounds. Junior guard Lisa Button (Jasper, NY/ Jasper-Troupsburg) scored six points on two three-pointers while pulling down three rebounds.

Hartwick (12-12. 7-8 Empire 8) was led by Lauren Ploof with a game high 21 points and had four steals. Danee Harrison recorded a double-double with 18 points and 12 boards.

Alfred closes out its regular season Saturday, Feb. 21, at 2 p.m. against visiting Utica.
