AU has 181 points after Friday’s competition at the state meet, which began Thursday and concludes Saturday. The state meet, which also serves as the Empire 8 Conference championships, is being held at Nottingham High School in Syracuse. Ithaca is in first place, followed by Stevens Tech and Union. AU is fourth among five Empire 8 teams competing at the meet.
Sophomore Sarah Blair (Auburn, NY/Auburn), who set a new school record in the 50-yard freestyle and place fourth in that event Thursday, again led the Lady Saxons on Friday, taking 16th in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:11.08). Senior Jessie Caccamo (Ballston Lake, NY/Shenendehowa) took 20th in the 400-yard individual medley (4:49.92).
AU placed 14th in each of the two relays swum on Friday. The team of freshman Donna Hoops (Geneseo, NY/Geneseo), senior Amy Buisman (Rochester, NY/Penfield), junior Meghan Jones (Beaver Falls, NY/Beaver River) and Blair turned in a time of 1:59.64 in the 200-yard medley relay, while Caccamo, Hoops, and sophomores Cailin Asmo (Johnson City, NY/Johnson City) and Calista Merritt (Conesus, NY/Livonia) swam the 800-yard freestyle relay in 8:32.59.
The championships wrap up Saturday, Feb. 21, with preliminary heats in the afternoon and finals in the evening. The AU men will attempt to defend their state and conference titles when the Upper New York State Collegiate Swimming Association (UNYSCSA)/Empire 8 championship meet is held next week, Feb. 26-28, also at Nottingham High.
