AU Alpine ski teams complete first day’s competition at Mideast Regionals

GLENS FALLS, NY — The Alfred University men’s and women’s Alpine ski teams competed Friday in the giant slalom races at the United States Collegiate Ski Association (USCSA) Mideast Regional championships, held at West Mountain in Glens Falls, NY.

The AU women stood in third place after Friday’s GS races and the Alfred men were in fifth. The teams will compete in the slalom on Saturday; the top three men’s and women’s team in the combined standings will advance to next month’s USCSA national championships, March 4-7 in Winter Park, CO.

Junior Lauren Pfeifer (Livonia, NY/Livonia), the defending Mideast Regional individual champ, placed first in the GS. Senior Rachel Beckwith (Landgrove, VT/Stratton Mountain) was 12th; sophomores Elissa DeGolyer (Silver Springs, NY/Letchworth) and Megan Caggianelli (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) were 26th and 30th, respectively; and junior Ulana Bihun (Jericho, VT/Mt. Mansfield) was 39th.

Freshman Steve Barton (Dansville, NY/Dansville) and senior Joel Buchanan (Almond, NY/Scio) led the AU men, tying for 19th place. Senior Robbie Ryminski (Warwick, NY/Warwick Valley) was 28th and freshman Steve Jervis (Attica, NY/Attica) was 31st.
