ALFRED, NY -- The Alfred University women’s basketball team lost their 2008-09 season finale, 77-70, to visiting Utica Saturday afternoon at the McLane Center.

Alfred (12-13, 6-10 in Empire 8) was down by six at halftime, but was able to shoot 50 percent from the field in the second half, and came back and take a 52-50 lead midway through the second. Utica regained the lead, 53-52, with just under 10 minutes left and never trailed again. AU trailed by 11 points (67-56) with 4:43 left and the closest the Lady Saxons could get was five points (67-62) with 3:46 remaining.

Free throws were a big difference in the game, as Utica made 16 from the line in the second half to only five for Alfred. The advantage in free throws helped Utica offset Alfred’s 12 three-point field goals. In addition, Utica outrebounded Alfred, 41-32.
