AU men's swimming and diving team set to defend state, conference titles

SYRACUSE, NY -- The Alfred University men's swimming and diving team will attempt to defend their Upper New York State Collegiate Swimming Association title at the UNYSCSA championship meet, scheduled for Thursday, Friday and Saturday at Nottingham High School in Syracuse.

AU is the two-time defending UNYSCSA and Empire 8 Conference champion. The state championship meet also serves as the Empire 8 championships.

AU is led by a strong senior contingent that includes twin brothers Matt and Mark Baker (Weedsport, NY/Weesport) and Brian Agro (Gray, ME/Cheverus).

Matt Baker is the defending state champ in the 100-yard backstroke and has won Empire 8 crowns in that event each of the last three seasons. The 2007 Empire 8 Swimmer of the Meet and last year's conference Swimmer of the Year, Baker has won All-American honorable mention honors in the 100 back at each of the last two NCAA Divison III national championship meets and has already qualified to compete in that event at this year's nationals. He is the top seed in the 100-yard back at this weekend's UNYSCSA championships.

Mark Baker is the top seed at the state and conference championships in the 100-yard freestyle. A Second Team Empire 8 all-star in the 100-yard and 200-yard freestyle last year, Baker won a state title in the 50-yard free as a sophomore in 2007.

Agro is the top seed at the state and conference meet in three events: the 100-yard and 200-yard breaststroke and 200-yard individual medley. Last year, he won a state crown in the 100 breast and won conference titles in the 100- and 200-yard breast and 200-yard IM en route to being named Empire 8 Swimmer of the Meet. He has qualified provisionally to compete in the 100-yard breast at this year's NCAA meet.

Junior Andrew Brisson (Greenwich, CT/Greenwich) is Alfred's other returning individual Empire 8 champ, winning the 500-yard free last year. AU is also defending Empire 8 champs in all five relays (200-and 400-yard medley and 200-, 400- and 800-yard freestyle) and is defending state champs in the 200 free and 400 medley relays.

AU is led by head coach Brian Striker, who has been named Empire 8 and UNYSCSA Coach of the Year honors each of the last two seasons.
