AU’s Murphy named Empire 8 women’s basketball all-star

ALFRED, NY — Lyndsay Murphy (Almond, NY/Hornell) a sophomore point guard on the Alfred University women’s basketball team, has been named a First Team Empire 8 Conference all-star.

Murphy, in her first season at AU after transferring from St. John Fisher, averaged 14.1 points per game (fifth in the Empire 8) and 4.2 assists per contest (second in the conference). She led the Empire 8 in three-pointers made per game (2.20) and was 14th in steals (1.64).

Murphy helped lead AU to a 12-13 record (6-10 Empire 8). The 12 wins mark the most in a season for an AU women’s team since the 1996-97 squad went 16-9. The six Empire 8 wins are the most-ever for an Alfred team.

Each season, the Empire 8 honors students-athletes from each conference school, who play on teams sponsored by the conference, with Sportsperson of the Year awards. Honorees, chosen by their coaches, exhibited outstanding sportsmanship in keeping with the conference’s mission of “competing with honor and integrity.” Alfred’s women’s basketball honoree is junior forward Alysha Dias (Rochester, NY/Greece Olympia).
