Saxons lead after first day at UNYSCSA meet

SYRACUSE, NY – The Alfred University men’s swimming and diving team leads after the first day’s competition at the Upper New York State Collegiate Swimming Association (UNYSCSA) championship meet.

The Saxons, two-time defending UNYSCSA champs, have 378 points after Thursday’s events, with Ithaca (350) in second and Union (330) in third. The state championships are being held Thursday, Friday and Saturday at Nottingham High School in Syracuse. The UNYSCSA meet also serves as the Empire 8 Conference championships; AU is also two-time defending Empire 8 champs.

Alfred won one relay and had one individual champion Thursday. Senior Brian Agro (Gray, NE/Cheverus) won the 200-yard individual medley in a school-record time 0f 1:53.58, which met NCAA “B” provisional qualifying standards. Agro, the top seed in the 200 IM, also has a “B” provisional cut in the 100-yard breaststroke, in which he is seeded first at the UNYSCSA meet.

Senior Matt Baker (Weedsport, NY/Weedsport), Agro, sophomore Zach Mix (Mt. Morris, NY/Mt. Morris) and sophomore Tyler Olsen (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga) won the 400-yard medley relay with an NCAA “B” cut-qualifying time of 3:23.51, which represents a new school record.

Baker placed second in the 200-yard IM with a time of 1:55.25. Baker’s time of 1:53.63 in Thursday’s preliminary heats earned him an NCAA “B” cut. Baker, a two-time All-American in the 100-yard backstroke, is already headed for the NCAA Division III championships in that event, for which he turned in an automatic qualifying time earlier this year. Senior Scott Sarkissian (Oswego, NY/Oswego) (2:00.78) and freshman Warren Dolben (Rye, NH/Berwick Academy) (2:01.85) placed 12th and 14th, respectively, in the 200-yard IM.

Junior Kameron Chambliss (Alfred Station, NY/Alfred-Almond) took second in 1-meter diving (416.60 points), while senior Mark Baker (Weedsport, NY/Weedsport) was third in the 50-yard freestyle (21.31 seconds) and Olsen was fifth in the 500-yard free (4:43.09). Other top performers for AU included sophomore Matt Lobban (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford-Mendon), 12th in the 500-yard free (4:48.83); and junior Andrew Brisson (Greenwich, CT/Greenwich) (21.72 seconds), sophomore Dan Steere (Hornell, NY/Alfred-Almond) (21.90 seconds) and Mix (22.03 seconds), 10th, 13th and 14th, respectively, in the 50-yard freestyle.

Mark Baker, Mix, Olsen and Brisson were third in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:24.78).

The championships continue Friday with preliminary heats in the morning and afternoon and finals in the evening.
