Softball team rallies to top Mt. Ida, whips New England to improve to 4-0

COCOA BEACH, FL – The Alfred University softball team scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to edge Mt. Ida, 4-3, Monday, then pounded the University of New England, 12-0.

The Saxons, playing 12 games in Cocoa Beach, FL, to start the season, improved to 4-0 with Monday’s victories.

Against Mt. Ida, AU scored a run in the bottom of the fifth to break a 1-1 tie and led 2-1 after six. Mt. Ida scored twice in the top half of the seventh to lead 3-2, setting the stage for the Saxons to rally in the home half. Junior Jordan Siefer (Sylvania, OH/Sylvania Southview) opened the inning with a single and was sacrificed to second. Junior centerfielder Jessica Figallo (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) doubled Siefer home with the tying run and, after a fly-out, junior third baseman Jesika LeBarron (Campbell, NY/Corning West) doubled Figallo home with the winning run.

The late-inning heroics made a winner out of freshman Nicole Hedrick (Albany, NY/Catholic Central), who got her second relief pitching victory in as many days. She went 1 1/3 innings and allowed two unearned runs on one hit while walking two and striking out three. Hedrick relieved freshman starter Claire Bennett (Mumford, NY/Caledonia-Mumford) who went 5 1/3 innings, striking out 10 and allowing an earned run on three hits. Figallo finished with two hits and a pair of RBIs and sophomore Madison Snyder (Medford, NY/Patchogue-Medford) had a hit and run.

In the second game, stopped after five innings, sophomore Chelsey Cary (Corfu, NY/Pembroke) earned her second shutout in two days. Cary, who no hit Daniel Webster College in a four-inning 17-0 win Sunday, allowed one hit in the win over New England. She fanned 10 batters and walked four in improving to 2-0 on the season.

Figallo (two runs scored) and junior shortstop Samantha Rollins (Hornell, NY/Hornell) (one run) each had three hits, a double and three RBIs, and sophomore first baseman Ashley Passaro (Long Beach, NY/Long Beach) went 2-for-4 with a three-run homerun, her second round-tripper of the season. LeBarron (one run, one RBI), Siefer (three runs) and senior catcher Nicole Messura (Albion, NY/Albion) (RBI double, two runs) each had a pair of hits for the Saxons.

AU played today against Finlandia at 9 a.m. and Penn State-Allegheny at 11 a.m. The Saxons are off Wednesday and play Penn State-Beaver twice on Thursday (1 p.m. and 3 p.m.)
