AU softball team remains unbeaten with two wins Tuesday in Florida

COCOA BEACH, FL – The Alfred University softball team kept its 2009 record perfect with a pair of wins Tuesday morning in Cocoa Beach, FL. The Saxons beat Finlandia, 10-5, and Penn State-Allegheny, 9-1, to improve their record 6-0.

In the win against Finlandia, junior shortstop Samantha Rollins (Hornell, NY/Hornell) went 3-for-4 with a double and two-run homerun (her second round-tripper in six games). Junior Jordan Siefer (Sylvania, OH/Sylvania Southview) went 1-for-4 with a run and four RBIs; junior Lauren Peterson (Abingdon, MD/Harford Tech) went 3-for-3 with two runs and an RBI; and sophomore Madison Snyder (Medford, NY/Patchogue-Medford) had two hits (including a double), scored a run and drove one in.

Freshman Molly Shepherd (Camillus, NY/West Genesee) got the win for AU, pitching 4 2/3 innings and allowing two earned runs on five hits while walking four and striking out two. Freshman Lydia de Martino (Millington, NJ/Watchung Hills) tossed 2 2/3 innings in relief and picked up the save.

Sophomore Chelsey Cary (Corfu, NY/Pembroke) earned her third pitching win in as many starts in the victory over Penn State-Allegheny, which was stopped after five innings. She went the distance, allowing one earned run (her first run allowed this year) on three hits while striking out 10 and walking one. In three games, Cary has allowed one run and four hits while striking out 25.

Junior third baseman Jesika LeBarron (Campbell, NY/Corning West) paced the AU offense, going 4-for-4 with a pair of doubles, five RBIs and a run scored. Rollins had a double and two RBIs; junior centerfielder Jessica Figallo (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) went 1-for-2 with a pair of walks and two runs; Siefer scored twice and drove in two; and senior catcher Nicole Messura (Albion, NY/Albion) had a hits and scored twice.

AU is now halfway through its 12-game slate in Cocoa Beach. After an off day Wednesday, the Saxons return to the field Thursday with a pair of games against Penn State-Beaver, at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
