Lady Saxons stay perfect with pair of shutout wins in Florida

COCOA BEACH , FL – The Alfred University softball team posted a pair of wins in Cocoa Beach, FL, Friday morning to improve to 10-0 on the season. AU followed a 9-1 victory over Finlandia with an 8-0 shutout of Norwich.

Junior Jordan Siefer (Sylvania, OH/Sylvania Southview) paced the Saxons in the win over Finlandia, going 3-for-3 with a double, five RBIs and two runs scored. Junior shortstop Samantha Rollins (Hornell, NY/Hornell) hit a double and a triple in four at-bats and drove in two runs and junior centerfielder Jessica Figallo (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) went 3-for-3 with two runs and three stolen bases. Junior third baseman Jesika LeBarron (Campbell, NY/Corning West) and junior leftfielder Shannon Mather (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott) each went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, with LeBarron driving in two runs.

Sophomore Chelsey Cary (Corfu, NY/Pembroke) got the pitching win for AU in a game that was stopped after six innings. She went three innings and allowed an unearned run on one hit while striking out one and walking one. Freshman Nicole Hedrick (Albany, NY/Catholic Central) threw two innings of shut-out ball, allowing one hit and striking out two, before freshman Sarah Scanlon (Mishawaka, IN/Mishawaka) earned the save, fanning two and walking one during a scoreless and hitless sixth.

Cary earned the shutout win in over Norwich in a game that was stopped after five innings. She struck out six and allowed two hits to improve to 6-0 on the year. In six starts this season, the transfer from Monroe Community College has 39 strikeouts while allowing two runs (one earned) on only seven hits.

Mather had two hits, including a triple, drove in three and scored once to pace AU. Junior second baseman Karen Folts (Penn Yan, NY/Penn Yan) had a triple, two RBIs and a run, while LeBarron added a double and two RBIs. Rollins (two runs) and Figallo (one run) each went was 1-for-3 and junior Lauren Peterson (Abington, MD/Harford Tech) had a hit, a run scored and an RBI.

AU wraps up its 12-game Florida trip with a pair of games Saturday, at 9 a.m. against Norwich and at 11 a.m. against SUNY Purchase.
